President Hichilema Calls for Cheaper Capital and Seamless Trade at Land-Linked Zambia Conference

President Hakainde Hichilema has urged for more affordable access to capital to support infrastructure development across Zambia and Africa.

Speaking during the Land-Linked Zambia Conference held in Lusaka this week, President Hichilema emphasized the importance of investing in nonstop border posts to facilitate the uninterrupted flow of trade and business across the continent.

He stressed that meaningful progress in infrastructure development requires strong collaboration with the private sector. “It is disheartening that Africa has the lowest levels of intra-trade and investment,” he said, calling for a change in this trend through regional cooperation and private-sector involvement.

And European Commission Directorate-General for International Partnerships representative Henrik Hololei echoed the President’s sentiments, noting that Zambia’s transport corridors must be integrated with other regional infrastructure to attract investment, drive economic growth, and create jobs.

He reaffirmed the European Union’s support for Zambia’s transport sector, particularly in upgrading strategic corridors for maximum economic impact.

Transport and Logistics Minister Frank Tayali also highlighted the government’s prioritization of the transport sector under President Hichilema’s leadership, citing its role in enhancing trade and attracting investment.

Africast Managing Director Chimwemwe Nyirenda added that the conference is focused on attracting investment and partnerships by promoting Zambia’s six key transport corridors, aimed at enabling the seamless movement of goods and services within Zambia and across borders.
