$30 Million Copper and Cobalt Mine Set to Boost Production in Zambia’s Copperbelt
A new $30 million copper and cobalt mine, Chilibwe Mine, is set to begin operations in Mufulira District, Copperbelt Province. The mine, located off the Ndola-Mufulira road, spans 20 hectares and is expected to produce 2,000 metric tonnes of copper and cobalt per month over its projected 10-year lifespan.
This venture aligns with President Hakainde Hichilema’s vision to increase Zambia’s copper output to 3 million tonnes annually by 2032.
At a recent scoping meeting in Mufulira, Chilibwe Mine’s management engaged key stakeholders to discuss the project’s potential environmental and social impacts. Norton Munkondya, the mine’s general manager, led the discussions with local leaders and community members.
Mufulira Mayor, Taneili Kamanga, urged the mine’s management to prioritize the welfare of residents displaced by the development.
“We want those displaced to start benefiting immediately. They deserve compensation, and something should be given to them at no cost,” said Kamanga.
The mine is expected to create significant employment opportunities in the region, with an initial workforce of 500 at the opening, and plans for expansion promising even more jobs in the future.
In addition to boosting local employment, the project is anticipated to increase revenues for public services, benefit local communities, and create business opportunities for local entrepreneurs.
