55% dependent on Russian gas, Germany opposes the ban on imports of gas, oil and coal from Putin’s country
The Federal Republic of Germany opposes the ban on imports of gas, oil and coal from Russia.
It was the German Ministers of Finance and Foreign Affairs who expressed this position of the German Government in response to European sanctions against Russia.
For Germany, the ban on importing gas, oil and coal from Russia would threaten the social peace of the country.
“We must be able to hold the sanctions over time,” explained the Head of German diplomacy, Annalena Baerbock, to the ARD channel.
And to add: “It is useless if in three weeks we discover that we only have a few days of electricity left in Germany and that we must therefore reverse these sanctions. We are ready to pay a very, very high economic price, but if tomorrow, in Germany or in Europe, the lights go out, that won’t stop the tanks,” added Ms. Baerbock during an interview with the ZDF channel.
If these sanctions put an end to this war, I would take them immediately, observed the German Minister.
For Annalena Baerbock, Germany should not take a decision that could have a negative impact on its economy.
“We must not limit our ability to hold out over time and deciding on an embargo unilaterally would have a negative impact on this ability,” she told the Bild newspaper.
For her, such a ban on importing gas and oil from Russia would threaten social peace in Germany.
You should know that Germany imports 55% of its gas from Russia, 42% of its oil and coal. A dependency for which the Berlin government has been self-critical since the invasion of Ukraine but which will take years to reduce.
Berlin is not the only capital of the European Union to be very reluctant to an embargo on fossil fuels from Russia.
