Gertler Earned Over $60M in Royalties from Congo Deal
The Congo is Not For Sale (CNPAV) is determined to maintain American sanctions against Israeli businessman Dan Gertler. According to CNPAV spokesman Jean-Claude Mputu, Gertler is protected by the highest level of governance in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and has already earned over $60 million since signing an agreement with the Congolese government.
Mputu asserts that the agreement signed between the DRC and Gertler’s Ventora group is unbalanced and calls for the maintenance of American sanctions against Gertler. He insists that until the DRC recovers its royalties, Gertler must be sanctioned.
The CNPAV had previously called on the Congolese government to disclose additional documents signed with Ventora and demanded a revision of the agreement, which it believes to be detrimental to the country.
Mputu revealed that Gertler has received over $60 million in royalties from the DRC since signing the agreement, in addition to the $2 billion he had already pocketed. He claims that maintaining the sanctions will help maintain pressure on Gertler and strengthen civil society’s advocacy against his past and present accomplices at the head of Congolese institutions.
The coalition is concerned that the agreement confirms fears of an agreement harmful to the country and calls on the government to revise it.
