Home Affairs Minister Tours FQM Zambia Mining Operations to Assess Security Status

Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Hon. Jack Mwiimbu, recently embarked on a tour of FQM’s Kansanshi Mining Plc in Solwezi and FQM Trident Limited in Kalumbila.

The purpose of the tour was to gain a firsthand understanding of the security situation surrounding these two investments located in the North Western Province.

Upon his arrival at Kansanshi Mining Plc, Hon. Mwiimbu was warmly received by General Manager Anthony Mukutuma. During their meeting, the Minister was informed about the persistent incursions by suspected criminals into FQM mining areas, who were actively seeking valuable minerals.

General Manager Anthony Mukutuma highlighted an immediate plan by Kansanshi Mining Plc to allocate resources for the construction of a police post along the company’s perimeter. This initiative aims to enhance police presence and safeguard the investment from potential threats.

At FQM Trident, General Manager Junior Keyser also apprised the Minister of the ongoing collaboration between the mine and the local police force. Recently, they successfully dispersed an illegal settlement that had emerged on the northern section of the mine’s premises. Keyser expressed gratitude to the government for its commitment to bolstering security, which would help mitigate conflicts between the mine and the surrounding community.

Hon. Mwiimbu assured the gathered officials that the government remains dedicated to creating a favorable environment for businesses to flourish, particularly in the mining sector.

He urged the police to remain vigilant and crack down on the rampant illegal activities that have become prevalent in the province.

The Minister emphasized the government’s appreciation for FQM’s investment in the country, noting that it contributes stable income through tax revenue. These funds play a crucial role in providing essential services to the people of Zambia.

The tour undertaken by Minister Mwiimbu demonstrates the government’s proactive approach to ensuring the security and prosperity of mining operations in the North Western Province.

By engaging with industry leaders and local authorities, the government aims to foster a secure and conducive environment for business growth and economic development.
