FQM’s Kansanshi Promotes First Female Production Coordinator

In a significant step towards fostering diversity and nurturing talent, FQM’s Kansanshi Mining Plc has recently appointed Mwila Chilekwa as the Production Coordinator at First Quantum Mining and Operations (FQMO).

This milestone makes Mwila the first woman to hold this position since the mine’s establishment, reinforcing the company’s commitment to creating equal opportunities for all employees.

Mwila Chilekwa began her journey with Kansanshi in 2019 as a Junior Mining Engineer under the local graduate programme. Her exemplary dedication and remarkable performance in the FQMO Optimisation department caught the attention of the mine’s management, leading to her well-deserved promotion.

The decision to appoint a female candidate for the position of Coordinator – Production was driven by Kansanshi’s aim to promote inclusivity and bridge the gender gap in the traditionally male-dominated mining industry.

Until now, the production department had not witnessed a female coordinator apart from a few female operators. To encourage the participation of women in leadership roles, the position was open to all interested female candidates.

Reflecting on her selection, Mwila expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “There was a vacancy for the position of Coordinator – Production, and Management specifically wanted a female to occupy the position as a way of promoting inclusion and bridging the gap in this male-dominated field.

We have never had a female Coordinator in production aside from a few female operators. The position was open to all the potential ladies interested in the role. Ten well-capable ladies applied for the vacant position and later interviewed, it was an open opportunity and I was picked for the role.”

Mwila’s promotion not only recognizes her personal achievements but also serves as a testament to FQM’s commitment to empowering women and fostering an environment that values diversity and talent.

By identifying employees based on their strengths and providing them with opportunities for growth and leadership development, FQM’s Kansanshi Mining Plc continues to promote a people-first culture that enables its workforce to realize their full potential.

With Mwila Chilekwa assuming the role of Production Coordinator, Kansanshi Mining takes a significant stride towards gender equality in the mining industry, inspiring other women to pursue leadership positions and contributing to a more inclusive and balanced workforce.
