Zambia’s Govt Urges Mopani Copper Mines to Tackle Dust Emissions from Tailings Dam
The government of Zambia has issued a directive to Mopani Copper Mines to take immediate action regarding dust emissions originating from the tailings dam situated in Bwafwano, Kalulushi, in the Copperbelt region.
Kalulushi District Commissioner, Kelly Jibinga, addressed concerns raised by Bwafwano residents regarding the continuous dust emissions from the Mopani Tailings dam, which have posed a significant health hazard to the community.
During a stakeholder meeting attended by representatives from Mopani, local residents, and the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA), Mr. Jibinga urged Mopani to effectively address the situation, emphasizing the importance of protecting human lives.
Cyrill Muyoba, Mopani Nkana Manager Metallurgical, assured the community that the mining company is taking measures to mitigate the environmental impact of these emissions.
Mr. Muyoba highlighted that Mopani has implemented initiatives such as the application of molasses spraying to reduce pollution effects.
