Zambia’s Government Commits to Electric Vehicle Procurement
In a groundbreaking move towards reducing fuel dependency and mitigating greenhouse emissions, the Secretary to the Cabinet, Patrick Kangwa, has issued a directive to all permanent secretaries and procurement unit heads to prioritize the procurement of electric vehicles (EVs).
Mr. Kangwa emphasized the Cabinet Office’s role as a driving force behind this initiative, aimed at lessening the country’s reliance on fossil fuels while promoting a cleaner environment. This decision aligns with the government’s broader strategy to cut fuel costs and reduce carbon emissions.
During a test drive of an electric vehicle, Mr. Kangwa revealed that the Cabinet Office plans to acquire electric vehicles and motorbikes before the end of this year.
Meanwhile, Mushota Lwanda, the Passenger Vehicle Sales Manager at Southern Cross Motors, announced that the company has already commenced importing electric vehicles, emphasizing their cost-effectiveness and their potential to support the government’s ambition of establishing a green economy.
