South Sudan President in DRC for Regional Peace Tour

South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir embarked on a diplomatic mission to ease tensions and foster cooperation in East Africa, meeting with his counterpart, President Felix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

In his capacity as Chairperson of the East African Community, President Kiir visited the DRC on March 25, aiming to address tensions between Rwanda and the DRC.

Presidential Press Secretary Lily Adhieu Martin emphasized that this visit is part of President Kiir’s ongoing regional peace tour, seeking to diplomatically engage countries to mitigate tensions along their borders.

During the meeting, the two leaders underscored the significance of initiatives like the Luanda and Nairobi Processes, which focus on resolving internal conflicts in the DRC and tensions in Rwanda, respectively, to promote peace and stability in the region.

President Kiir’s peace tour extends beyond the DRC, having previously visited Rwanda and Burundi in February to discuss regional peace and security with their leaders.

He is also scheduled to meet with President João Lourenço of Angola to receive updates on the progress of the Luanda Process, further demonstrating South Sudan’s commitment to fostering peace and cooperation across East Africa.
