Mopani Copper Mines Produces First 200 Tonnes of Copper Anodes Post-Revival
Mopani Copper Mines has successfully produced its first 200 tonnes of copper anodes since its revitalization under new equity partner, International Resources Holdings (IRH).
The company was officially handed over to IRH in March this year by President Hakainde Hichilema.
Mopani Copper Mines CEO, Charles Sakanya, announced that significant transformations have taken place since the revival. In the past three months, 400 professionals have been hired to enhance productivity.
The mine has also doubled its shifts, resulting in a notable increase in production. Current copper output stands at 65,000 tonnes, with plans to increase production to 225,000 tonnes under IRH’s management.
During a courtesy visit by Technology and Science Minister Hon. Felix Chipota Mutati to Mufulira District Commissioner Saboi Kabika, ahead of a graduation at Mopani Central Training Center, Sakanya revealed that full operations at the mine are expected to commence in October.
Minister Mutati commended Mopani’s management for revitalizing the mine, boosting productivity, and creating employment opportunities. He also noted that the payment of K220 million to contractors and suppliers has significantly improved local income.
Mufulira District Commissioner Saboi Kabika expressed optimism within the community, highlighting that the revival of Mopani Copper Mines has brought renewed hope and confidence among residents, with expectations of better living standards in the town.
