Mopani Copper Mines Aims to Become Global Leader with New Vision and Strategy

Mopani Copper Mines PLC has unveiled a bold new corporate vision, targeting to become a global leader in the copper production and mining value chain.

The updated vision, “To become a world champion mine through BEST values,” replaces the previous goal of being a “world-class mining operation.”

This shift reflects the company’s evolving strategic ambitions under the leadership of its new majority shareholders, International Resources Holding (IRH), who have set a target to increase copper production from the current 65,000 tonnes to 225,000 tonnes annually within the next four years.

Mopani Copper Mines CEO, Charles Sakanya, emphasized that while “world-class” signifies meeting industry standards in efficiency, safety, and environmental stewardship, the new vision aims even higher.

“Becoming a world champion mine means excelling beyond industry norms. We are positioning Mopani to lead the global mining sector, setting new benchmarks in innovation, sustainability, and competitiveness,” Sakanya stated.

The company’s new vision is anchored on its BEST values, an acronym representing key corporate principles:

  • Business-wise: Encouraging a sense of ownership among all stakeholders.
  • Enablement and Empowerment: Providing a supportive environment for stakeholders to thrive.
  • Safety, Health, and Environment: Prioritizing people and social issues over production.
  • Teamwork and Togetherness: Fostering a culture of collaboration.

To achieve this ambitious vision, Mopani Copper Mines will invest heavily in workforce development, ensuring employees have the skills needed for high-performance operations.

The company also remains committed to reducing its carbon footprint, embracing circular economy principles, and improving energy efficiency in its operations.

“We believe this shift from world-class to world champion status is more than just words—it’s a clear signal of our commitment to leadership and excellence in the mining industry, both locally and globally,” Sakanya concluded.
