Goma Mining Conference Promotes Tax Compliance and Economic Development
The mining conference held on October 14, 2024, in Goma, North Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo, served as a vital platform for local authorities to raise awareness among taxpayers in the mining sector about their obligations.
The provincial government emphasized the importance of meeting tax responsibilities, warning that failure to comply could lead to the forfeiture of mining and quarry rights.
“There was a pressing need to organize this mining day in Goma,” stated Peter Chirimwami Nkuba, the provincial governor. “It allowed the General Directorate of Revenue of North Kivu to recover the taxes owed.”
The governor asserted his authority to revoke mining and quarry rights from holders who violate the legal and regulatory provisions outlined in the current mining code.
He expressed hope that the conference would contribute significantly to restoring peace in the region and address the social needs of the North Kivu population.
Aron Byamungu, a technical advisor focused on legal issues and the planning and monitoring of standards within the national framework for civil society consultation and support, urged all mining companies and cooperatives to fulfill their legal obligations.
He highlighted the necessity of paying taxes and duties to enable the provincial government to implement its development plan and ensure transparency in the management of mining revenues.
Mbindule Mithondo, the chairman of the board of directors of the mining cadastre Cami, traveled from Kinshasa to explain the critical role his organization plays in the sector.
The conference also brought together various mining companies and cooperatives, fostering collaboration among stakeholders.
