DRC Strengthens Position as World’s Second-Largest Gold Producer
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has firmly established itself as the world’s second-largest gold producer, surpassing major players like Peru in recent years.
With an annual gold production of 2.8 million tonnes, the DRC is targeting the top position in global rankings by 2025.
In 2024, the country recorded a remarkable milestone, exporting a cumulative 2.35 million tonnes of gold during the first nine months. This represents a 17% increase compared to the same period in 2023, underscoring the sector’s growth trajectory.
However, challenges persist. Illicit mining practices remain a significant hurdle to unlocking the full potential of the country’s mineral wealth.
To address this issue, the DRC’s National Executive is actively pursuing strategies to curb illegal exploitation, aiming to enhance compliance, boost formal production, and attract more investment in its mining sector.
As the DRC works to solidify its leadership in global gold production, efforts to tackle these challenges will be critical in achieving its ambitious goals.
