Mali to Partially Lift Mining Permit Suspension on March 15

Mali will partially lift its suspension on the issuance of mining permits starting March 15, the Ministry of Mines announced.

The West African nation, one of Africa’s leading gold producers, halted the allocation of mining titles in November 2022, citing the need to improve regulatory procedures. In 2023, the country introduced a new mining code that increased taxes and granted the state larger stakes in mining assets.

The ministry stated that the suspension will be eased following extensive efforts to clean up the mining register. As a result, authorities will now accept applications for the renewal of search and exploitation permits, requests to transition from exploration to production, and applications to transfer exploitation permits.

However, the issuance of new mining permits and the transfer of exploration permits will remain suspended.
