A brave new world for the DRC
“What doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger.” This famous quote by the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche is strongly influenced by the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo).
The Democratic Republic of Congo has been repeatedly hit by tragic setbacks that left indelible scars on the country and its people. This includes decades of dictatorship, civil war and at least 10 Ebola outbreaks over the years. And now the country is addressing the effects of the COVID 19 pandemic.
Shortly after the last Ebola patient was discharged from the hospital in March of this year, the country announced its first COVID-19 case. It’s been a tough break for a country that has been through so much. Despite all the challenges and setbacks, the country continues to achieve success, even if only slowly, despite the adverse circumstances.

Given the abundance of mineral wealth that is still on high demand, there is little doubt that the country’s mining sector can contribute significantly to the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s socio-economic wellbeing. In a world beyond and after COVID-19, however, things will not go on as usual, and a fundamental change in the way mining is done in the DRC is required by all players.
