At The End Of December 2022, Gécamines Produced 4,562 Tonnes of Copper
Gécamines, the General Company of Quarries and Mines, has reported that it produced approximately 4,562 tonnes of copper throughout the year 2022.
This information was published in a summary of statistical data from the Central Bank of Congo (BCC) released in early January 2023. The report indicates that Gécamines experienced a notable uptick in copper production during 2022, compared to the previous year.
According to the same sources, Gécamines’ copper production was around 3,996 tonnes in 2021, which represents an increase of nearly 566 tonnes in 2022.
However, the Central Bank of Congo did not include data on the total copper production in the Democratic Republic of Congo for 2021 in its report. It is worth noting that for the whole of 2021, mining companies based in the Democratic Republic of Congo had recorded copper production of around 1,802,897 tonnes.
It should also be noted that despite a slight drop of 0.88% on the stock market on Wednesday, January 25, 2023, copper made a strong start to the year, rising to 9,257.85 USD per tonne compared to 8,524 USD per tonne at the end of December 2022.
The persistent tensions between Russia and Ukraine, as well as the rising number of positive cases of Covid-19 in China, are believed to be the factors contributing to the meteoric increase in the price of copper.
