Demand for battery metals to jump 500% by 2050

Production of so-called battery metals, such as graphite, lithium and cobalt, will have to increase by nearly 500% by 2050 to meet the growing demand for clean energy technologies, the World Bank said on Monday. According to the global lender, over 3 billion tonnes of minerals and metals will be needed to deploy wind, solar and geothermal power, as well as energy storage required for moving transitioning to a low-carbon economy. Many of their critical minerals used to make batteries for electrical vehicles or are found in developing nations. The World… Read More Here

Barrick puts Kibali mess behind with agreement to pay DRC early dividend

BARRICK Gold is to pay dividends from the 750,000 ounce a year Kibali mine to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) earlier after heading off attempts by the government to sell its 10% stake in the mine.  “We have decided to pay dividends early [to the government,” he said, adding that “the carried partner” normally receives payouts towards the end of the mine’s life “which makes no sense at all”. Bristow was commenting ahead of the firm’s first quarter presentation which was characterised by a strong gold price that helped offset… Read More Here

Global Mining Report Card: Africa needs to improve

The latest Annual Survey of Mining Companies released by the Fraser Institute in 2020 for the 2019 calendar year does not bode well for Africa – with five of the bottom 10 countries coming from the continent. This includes the Democratic Republic of Congo which ranks a lowly 70th  of 76. Why are investors giving these countries the thumbs down? And what can be done to turn their fortunes around? Stedman co-author of the Fraser Institutes’ Annual Survey of Mining Companies 2019 adds that The results are based on correspondence from mining executives from… Read More Here

Pollution causing birth defects in children of DRC cobalt miners

Thousands of people in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are being exposed to dangerous levels of toxic pollution that is causing birth defects in their children as they mine for cobalt used to make rechargeable batteries for smartphones, laptops and electric cars, a new medical study has found. Research published in the Lancet last week found that local people working in mines in the African “copperbelt”, a mining region stretching across Zambia and the DRC, are at significantly higher risk of having children born with serious birth defects. Researchers from… Read More Here

A brave new world for the DRC

“What doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger.”  This famous quote by the German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche is strongly influenced by the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo).  The Democratic Republic of Congo has been repeatedly hit by tragic setbacks that left indelible scars on the country and its people. This includes decades of dictatorship, civil war and at least 10 Ebola outbreaks over the years. And now the country is addressing the effects of the COVID 19 pandemic. Shortly after the last Ebola patient was discharged from the… Read More Here

How Swiss cobalt traders are trying to prevent child labour

Swiss cobalt traders Glencore and Trafigura deal very differently with small-scale miners in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), many of whom are children. Eight kilograms of cobalt are needed for every electric car battery. More than 70% of the increasingly sought-after metal is mined in the southeast of the DRC. But most of the miners are not employed by mining companies. Some 250,000 Congolese, including many children, dig the cobalt-bearing rock with bare hands or with primitive tools at best. As there are hardly any areas where small-scale miners… Read More Here

First Cobalt to produce battery-grade by year-end

Canada’s First Cobalt  announced on Monday that it expected to begin production of cobalt sulphate late this year or in early 2021, which would make it North America’s only primary producer of the key ingredient for the batteries that power electric vehicles ( ) and high-tech devices. The Toronto-based company said the expansion of its refinery in Ontario, which it is carrying out in partnership with mining and commodities trading giant Glencore , would help North America reduce its reliance on China. The country dominates the supply chain for rechargeable… Read More Here

Zambia’s decline against DRC’s copper production

Zambia is now one of the ten least attractive jurisdictions in the world for mining investment, according to the Fraser Institute’s 2019 Annual Survey of Mining Companies, released earlier this year. But this has not always been the case. It is the first time that Zambia has found itself in the bottom 10 of the 76 participating jurisdictions, with its ranking having dropped drastically in 2019 compared to previous years, writes CHANTELLE KOTZE The Fraser Institute’s Annual Survey of Mining Companies provides a comprehensive report on government policies that either attract or… Read More Here
