Improving the safety of miners with IoT

South Africa’s mining deaths have reduced considerably over the past several years. In 2016, the industry recorded only 73 fatalities. Even though that is still 73 too many deaths, it’s the lowest rate since records began and reflect ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety in mining environments. Injury rates are also falling fast. These figures are well ahead of China, where coal mining alone resulted in over 200 fatalities in 2019. But, in contrast, countries such as Canada and Australia have much lower fatality numbers. These are the… Read More Here

Mining companies risk “SDG-washing'' 3 Corporate social responsibility

Mining companies risk “SDG-washing”

Mining companies risk being perceived as “SDG washing” through their selective reporting on their contributions to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This emerges from a new report by the Responsible Mining Foundation (RMF). According to RMI 2020 report, companies often emphasize in their sustainability reports the positive contributions they make to SDGs, while omitting negative impacts that would hinder progress in achieving these goals. The report assessed a total of 38 major mining companies, which account for 28% of global mining activity. RMF CEO Hélène Piaget said: “The SDGs… Read More Here

How cobalt can help produce hydrogen for clean fuel

A research team from the Tokyo Institute of Technology created the first visible-light photoanode made of titanium dioxide or TiO2 enhanced with cobalt. The anode is a key element needed to achieve affordable water splitting to produce hydrogen, a clean alternative to fossil fuel. In a paper published in the journal ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, the researchers explain that photo electrochemical water splitting, the process by which light energy is used to split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen is a promising approach to obtain pure hydrogen for use as… Read More Here

With gold surging, miners face payouts versus production dilemma

As gold prices rise, miners have been boosting shareholder payouts in the face of a decline in global output. That’s worrying some investors concerned about the long-term growth prospects of an industry built on a depleting resource. The value of gold, a haven commodity, is driven more by global economics than supply and demand. Any unexpected event — from a surprising cure for coronavirus to a positive trade deal — could drop the value significantly. High prices put more gold scrap on the market, low ones increase hoarding and,… Read More Here

Barrick opposes Sokimo’s sale of interest in Kibali

Barrick Gold  says it will not  approve Société Minière de Kilo-Moto’s (Sokimo) intended sale of its 10% interest in the Kibali gold mine in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The world’s second-largest gold miner’s comments came as Canadian junior AJN Resources said earlier this month that  it had entered into a memorandum of understanding with Sokimo to acquire several of its rights in the DRC. Those included the state miner’s shares in Kibali Goldmines – the owner of Kibali mine. Barrick noted that Sokimo was contractually bound to the company… Read More Here
