Botswana seeks new De Beers diamond sales deal by end of April

Botswana plans to conclude negotiations with De Beers on a diamond sales agreement by the end of April to replace the current ten-year deal that expired in January. The government wants to see more gems cut and polished within the borders of the world’s second-biggest  diamond producer, creating jobs and boosting the state coffers, according to  Lefoko Moagi, the minister of mineral resources, green technology and energy security. An agreement is crucial for both parties. Botswana accounts for more than two-thirds of De Beers’ production, while the country relies… Read More Here

Oxair has developed a solution for inflating truck tires at remote mining sites

Australian company Oxair announced that it has developed a compact nitrogen generator that will help mining companies and other heavy industries operating in remote locations eliminate the need to outsource their nitrogen to fill the tires of their trucks. In a press release, Oxair stated that its facilities offer continuous gas flow from the atmosphere. They also use Pressure Swing Adsorption, or PSA, a membrane technology that uses cheap filtration methods for an on-site nitrogen production. Tires filled with nitrogen are more resistant to hot climates and freezing temperatures at… Read More Here

Ivanhoe’s Friedland rubbishes the ‘fiction’ that mining copper in Chile is safer than Congo

BILLIONAIRE mining entrepreneur, Robert Friedland, put the boot into Chile and its established major copper mining groups. Friedland, whose company Ivanhoe Mines is developing major new copper and zinc mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), said at the Mining Indaba last week: “It’s absolutely silly to think that Chile is a safer place to mine and should have a three or four per cent discount rate and, somehow, the DRC should have a 12% discount rate. “There’s this fiction that somehow Africa is dangerous and it’s safe… Read More Here

DRC in talks with investors on financing state owned cobalt company

PRIVATE capital could be invited to fund the activities of a planned state company in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Reuters said, citing comments from the country’s minister of mines. Bloomberg had last week reported that the Democratic Republic of Congo was interested in establishing a state monopoly that would buy the cobalt produced by the artisanal miners. However, according to a report by Reuters, Minister of mines Willy Kitobo Samsoni would invite investors. “It is easier for us to be funded by the Congolese government,” Samsoni… Read More Here

In the previous year, Glencore  agreed to supply cobalt with battery maker SK Innovation, China’s GEM Co Ltd, Umicore and BMW. Glencore produced 46,300 tonnes of cobalt in 2019, up 10% from the previous year  but expects to churn… Read More Here

Peru’s mining sector slowed down in 2019

Peru’s mining sector fell by 0.05% in 2019, a report that was shown by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics shows. According to the government agency, a 0.8% contraction in the metallic mining sub-sector is to blame for the downfall. In the world’s No. 2 copper producer and sixth-largest gold producer, such a drop carries so much weight that the 4.6% growth experienced by the oil and gas sub-sector wasn’t good enough to make up for it. In 2019, Peru produced almost 2.5 million fine metric tons of copper or… Read More Here

Coronavirus stalled First Quantum’s Zambian stake sale talks

The coronavirus has temporarily derailed talks to sell a minority stake in First Quantum Mineral’s Zambian operations, company executives said. The virus outbreak is preventing face-to-face meetings with potential Chinese buyers, postponing a sale that’s key to the Vancouver-based First Quantum’s $2-billion debt-reduction plan, the copper miner said during its fourth-quarter earnings call. Concerns that the virus outbreak will slow demand in China, the largest consumer of most commodities, have rattled markets around the world. That sent copper prices tumbling, highlighting the need for miners to hedge against volatility. The… Read More Here
