Barrick Lumwana Mine to Double Copper Output by 2028
Barrick Lumwana Mine is set to double its annual copper production from 120,000 metric tonnes to 240,000 metric tonnes by 2028, driven by the expansion of its Super Pit Mine.
During a visit to the mine by a delegation of three Cabinet Ministers led by Minister of Mines and Mineral Development Paul Kabuswe, Barrick Lumwana Country Manager Anthony Malenga credited the anticipated growth to the government’s stable policy environment.
Mr. Malenga highlighted the company’s dedication to local employment, noting that 99% of its workforce comprises Zambians, with 40% being community members from Kalumbila District.
He added that the Super Pit expansion would significantly increase job opportunities, with employee numbers rising from the current 2,500 to 8,500 by 2028. Additionally, 550 permanent positions will be created as part of this growth.
Minister Paul Kabuswe expressed confidence that the expected increase in copper production aligns with Zambia’s strategic objective of reaching three million metric tonnes of annual copper production by 2030.
He emphasized the importance of such developments in driving the nation’s economic growth and achieving its mining sector goals.
The expansion of Barrick Lumwana Mine not only reflects the company’s commitment to sustainable development but also underscores the potential for the mining sector to contribute to Zambia’s long-term economic ambitions.
