Ivanhoe’s Friedland expects foreign migration to Congo’s “higher grade” copper mines

THE Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is “the Saudi Arabia of copper, cobalt and hydroelectric generation potential”, according to Robert Friedland, the executive co-chairman of Ivanhoe Mines which started production from its Kamoa-Kakula copper mine in the DRC in May this year. Taking part in a panel discussion at the FT Mining Summit, Friedland said that it was “blatantly obvious” more foreign mining companies were going to invest in the DRC because it was “the logical place to mine”. Turning to the latest regulatory developments in the country, Friedland commented: “We… Read More Here

From minerals to beer, Congo finance minister hunts for cash

The Democratic Republic of Congo is intent on revisiting mining contracts, rescinding and reselling unused oil permits and boosting taxes on beer to fund its development plans, according to Nicolas Kazadi, the country’s finance minister.   A country the size of Western Europe with 80 million inhabitants, Congo had a budget of just $4 billion last year and poverty is rampant, despite its vast riches of copper, cobalt and other natural resources. World’s cobalt supply deficit is shrinking, says S&P

A market deficit for cobalt is shrinking as the world’s top producers of the prized metal expand production to meet the demand for batteries used in electric vehicles (EVs), according to a new report by S&P Global Intelligence.  With a spoke in EV sales this year, demand for cobalt drove major producers to plan to increase output at mine sites in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and balance the market, says S&P.   Some EV-makers have begun seek alternatives to the battery metal, which provides stability to the battery cathode, but is costly and linked to allegations of human rights abuses of artisanal miners in the DRC. Market Intelligence says the metal… Read More Here
