China targets 20% share of new energy vehicle sales by 2025

The Chinese government has launched a new energy vehicle (NEV) industry development plan that will see NEV sales account for 20% of the country’s total vehicle sales by 2025. The plan, which covers the period from 2021 to 2035, will also see battery-electric vehicles dominating new vehicle sales by 2035. By that time, China’s goal is to have all of its public transport running on electric power. Announced on Nov. 2, the industry plan also aims to lower the average power consumption of electric vehicles to 12 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per… Read More Here

Clean Long-duration Energy Storage ideal for Renewable Energy Plus Storage Solutions in Mining Microgrids

Reliable, cost-effective energy supply 24×7 is an essential resource for successful mining operations, whether grid-connected or off-grid.  In Africa, reliability of utility-sourced electricity is becoming more and more of a challenge, while off-grid diesel generation and the cost and logistics of fuel supply is increasingly problematic.  And in both scenarios, the CO2 footprint and increasing carbon tax needs to be considered.  The mining industry is therefore exploring the option of solar energy to partially substitute energy from current sources; however, solar energy on its own cannot be utilised 24×7 in… Read More Here

Ituri Energy to Produce 15MW of Clean Power in the DRC

The company Ituri Energy (Energie de l’Ituri) was officially launched this week, with the mandate of providing the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) with 15MW of clean electricity. Four megawatts (MW) of power will be derived from solar energy, while 11MW will be produced from hydropower. The creation of Ituri Energy comes as a result of the organization of a roundtable in November 2019, during which Jean Bamanisa, Governor of the Ituri Province, announced plans to raise the region’s access to power from one percent currently to 30% in 2023.… Read More Here

South Africa needs $11bn to help transition from coal to renewable energy

South Africa needs a climate finance transaction of $11 billion to help the country transition from coal to renewable energy and to soften the blow for communities dependent on the mining and use of the fossil fuel, a University of Cape Town study said. South Africa, through state utility Eskom Holdings SOC Ltd., is almost entirely dependent on coal for electricity. The country produces the same quantity of greenhouse gases as the U.K., which has an economy eight times larger. “The study envisions a climate finance transaction of $11 billion… Read More Here

Climate Change & Energy at Kamoa- Kakula project – DRC

Ivanhoe Mines accepts the assessment of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) regarding climate change science, which findings include that temperatures are gradually rising globally due to human activities and that physical impacts are unavoidable. We believe humanity must pursue the twin objectives of limiting global temperature increase in line with current international agreements, while actively pursuing access to innovative, reliable and affordable energy to support economic development and improved living standards. Both of these objectives are essential to sustainable development. As indicated by current scientific global… Read More Here

Power from the DRC's Inga-Katanga line increases from 560 MW to 1,120 MW 11 Mining in DRC Energy

Power from the DRC’s Inga-Katanga line increases from 560 MW to 1,120 MW

The national electricity company (SNEL) rehabilitated the Inga converter station (SCI) and the Kolwezi converter station. This work carried out by the firm AEE made it possible to double the total power of the line which goes to 1120 MW. The energy produced by Inga’s power plants is alternating current, explains SNEL. Since the Inga-Katanga line is 1700 km long, the transport of alternating current will create a loss of 30 to 40% at the terminal (SCK), hence the need to convert this current into direct which will only have a loss… Read More Here
