Maamba mitigates power risk at Lake Kariba

Falling water levels in Kariba have necessitated Maamba Collieries (MCL) to relocate its pumps to a new location in the Kariba Lake to provide water essential for the boilers of its 300-Megawatt power plant. MCL runs two power generating units, with a capacity of 150 MW, each of which consumes about 9,000 m3 of water a day when running at full capacity. Low rainfall during the last wet season caused water levels at the primary location of the pump station in Lake Kariba to drop dramatically from the usual 9-m depths… Read More Here

Hydrogen fuel cell mining set to cut Amplats’ greenhouse gas emissions – Griffith

JOHANNESBURG  – The introduction of hydrogen fuel cell mining in response to climate change is poised to cut the greenhouse gas emissions of platinum group metals (PGMs) mining company Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) by 30%. A large enabler of this significant reduction is the introduction of hydrogen fuel cell mining trucks, outgoing CEO Chris Griffith said on Monday at the company’s presentation of superlative 2019 results. (Also watch attached Creamer Media video.) “These trucks will use green hydrogen generated from solar photovoltaic farms and will have zero carbon emissions. We’re on track… Read More Here

Rio Tinto investing in 34 MW solar plant at Pilbara mine

Diversified mining company Rio Tinto is investing in its first company-owned solar facility, with about 100 000 solar panels set to supply electricity to its new Koodaideri mine in Australia’s Pilbara. The company is investing $98-million in a 34 MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant, which is complemented by a 12 MWh battery energy storage system in Tom Price to help power its entire Pilbara power network. The PV plant is expected to supply all Koodaideri’s electricity demand during peak solar power generation times and about 65% of the mine’s average electricity… Read More Here

South Africa’s power crisis puts mining sector at risk

South Africa’s dire power situation is putting pressure on many commercial and industrial players that rely heavily on stable supply. According to Ted Blom, independent power and mining expert and commentator and a partner at Energy & Mining Advisors: “More than 30 percent of South African mining projects will be terminated prematurely due to additional power costs if suitable solutions are not found within the next 12 months.” His comments follow Mineral Resource and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe’s announcement last week at Mining Indaba that the government had conceded that it… Read More Here

Virus-hit China may need more imports of coal. The tricky part – shipping it

China’s domestic coal mines are struggling to ramp up production in the face of the ongoing coronavirus epidemic. That’s a situation that may seem positive for seaborne exporters, but in reality it may be challenging for miners to take advantage. While there may be increased demand for imported coal in China in coming weeks, the problem for major exporters such as Indonesia, Australia and the United States is going to be one of logistics. The coronavirus is starting to have an impact on supply chains and will make it more… Read More Here

DR Congo’s Inga dam and Africa’s energy transformation

Power Africa, an initiative of the United States government, aims to create 60 million connections for first-time users and generate 30,000 megawatts (MW) by 2030. Since its launch in 2013, the initiative has enabled some 15 million new connections providing first-time electricity access to 68 million homes and businesses. The problem, however, remains huge with close to 600 million people not having access to electricity. Lack of electricity or chronic under-supply of secure and affordable electricity is a barrier to growth, job creation and poverty reduction as this has… Read More Here

DRC, ZAMBIA MOVE TO DEVELOP LUAPULA POWER PLANT

Harare – The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Zambia’s plan to develop a hydro power plant at the Luapula river has made progress, following the two country’s move to embark on a pre-feasibility study that will determine the next phase of the project. In 2015, the governments of Zambia and DRC signed an inter-governmental memorandum of understanding that gave birth to the idea of constructing a 1 000 MW power station at the Luapula River that will boost power supply to the two countries. Originally, the Luapula project… Read More Here
