Epiroc says a large fleet of battery-electric mining equipment will be deployed at Assmang Proprietary Ltd’s Black Rock underground manganese mine in the Northern Cape of South Africa after the two companies signed an agreement. Assmang has ordered several of Epiroc’s battery loaders and mine trucks – the Scooptram ST14 Battery and Minetruck MT42 Battery, respectively – for the deployment. Sweden-based mining equipment manufacturer Epiroc has won an order including battery-electric machines and automation solutions from the Canadian Malartic Partnership to be used in a new underground gold mine currently under construction. The equipment includes a variety of drill rigs, loaders and mine trucks, an unspecified amount of which will be battery powered. Sweden-based mining equipment manufacturer Epiroc has launched a partnership with steelmaker SSAB to secure fossil-free steel for use in its mining equipment as part of a broader push to cut carbon emissions. SSAB is working to deliver fossil-free steel to the market at a commercial scale in 2026. It delivered the first steel made of hydrogen-reduced iron in 2021.
