FQM’s Enterprise Nickel Mine to provide transparent supplier opportunities for goods and services

Following the commissioning of the Enterprise Nickel Mine which will position Zambia among the top 10 producers of nickel in the world, and the number one producer of the metal on the continent, FQM Trident Ltd will employ 700 direct employees and provide supplier opportunities for goods and services to be undertaken through transparent contract offers. FQM Trident Ltd has since identified one such project which is to construct a bridge along the main road leading to the Enterprise Nickel Mine. The bridge is meant to protect pipes that have… Read More Here

Zambia to be a champion of nickel production in Africa-HH

Zambia officially began its journey to becoming a key player in the new global electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem this week as President Hakainde Hichilema launched the Enterprise nickel mine in Kalumbila. Once up and running, First Quantum Minerals’ mine will be the largest producer of the strategic metal in Africa. Nickel, like lithium, cobalt, and copper, is an essential component in the batteries essential for the new era of ‘green’ vehicles. Designed to process 4 million tonnes of ore and produce around 28,000 tonnes of nickel per year, Enterprise will… Read More Here

Enterprise Nickel Mine is edging closer to completion, and becoming a global top-10 nickel mine

The 8 May 2022 announcement that Enterprise Nickel Mine would be brought online within 12 months after a final $100 million cash injection from First Quantum Minerals (FQM) was met with much fanfare, during a buoyant week for Zambia at the Investing in African Mining Indaba. Mining For Zambia takes a look at the progress that has been made in the weeks following the news, and the impact that a large-scale nickel mining operation will have on North-Western Province and Zambia as a whole. *** Fifteen kilometres from First Quantum Minerals’ (FQM’s) Sentinel… Read More Here

Copper, nickel prices spike as Europe scrambles for metal

On Wednesday, copper prices continued to rise with May futures jumping to a high of $4.7050 a pound ($10,373 a tonne) in New York, levels last seen during the bellwether metal’s October spike – in sight of record territory. Aluminum hit a record high of $3,590 a tonne and the price of nickel raced to an 11-year peak above $25,000 a tonne. Concerns about supply disruption and low global stockpiles are behind the move higher, trumping concerns over the impact of the Ukraine invasion on global growth, rising interest rates in… Read More Here

Nickel price reaches its highest level in a decade at 25,000 USD per ton

Nickel hit $25,000 a tonne for the first time since 2011, extending a rally driven by dwindling global inventories and fears that tensions in Ukraine could disrupt supplies from the main Russian producer. The metal, used in stainless steel and rechargeable batteries, rose 3.2% to $25,135 a tonne. It is the best performer on the London Metal Exchange this year, climbing amid a flurry of forecasts that supply will lag behind rapidly growing demand from the electric vehicle industry.  Commodity investors were weighing the potential damage of sanctions on Russia after… Read More Here

Electric vehicle battery demand surge supercharges nickel

Nickel rose to its highest level in more than a decade on Monday morning. London Metal Exchange (LME) three-month nickel has broken through January’s high of $24,435 per tonne to reach $24,610, a level last traded in 2011. Time-spreads remain in the grip of a ferocious squeeze, the cash premium closing last week valued at $465 per tonne. The huge incentive for LME delivery has drawn some metal into exchange warehouses but not enough to halt the running downtrend. The possibility of sanctions on Russia, which accounts for about 7% of… Read More Here

Glencore’s output falls amid COVID Challenges

Switzerland-based mining company Glencore saw the production of most of its minerals fall year-on-year (YoY) in 2021 as the COVID-19 pandemic continued to affect operations. The company saw falls in copper, zinc, lead, nickel, gold and silver production. The most significant drop was in lead, which declined by 14% YoY to 222,000 tonnes, followed by gold, which fell by 12% YoY to 809,000 tonnes.  However, the miner did see an increase in ferrochrome production output, which jumped by 43% to 1.46 million tonnes, and coal-coking, which rose by 20% to 9,100 tonnes. Despite… Read More Here

Glencore, Managem partner to recover cobalt, lithium, nickel from recycled batteries

Diversified miners Glencore and Managem have entered into a partnership to produce cobalt from recycled cobalt, nickel and lithium at Managem’s Compagnie de Tifnout Tiranimine (CTT) hydrometallurgical refinery in Morocco. Glencore and CTT intend to enter into a five-year tolling agreement for 1 200 t/y of recycled cobalt, as well as nickel hydroxide and lithium carbonate. The partnership forms part of Glencore and Managem’s commitments to support the electric vehicle industry in achieving its metals recycling targets. The partnership is conditional on a feasibility study to assess the commercial viability of… Read More Here

Tesla signs $1.5 billion deal for nickel from Talon Metals’ Minnesota project

Tesla on Monday said it has signed its first US supply deal for nickel, tapping Talon Metals Corp’s Tamarack mine project in Minnesota. Under the terms of the deal, which Talon (TSX:TLO) said came after “extensive and detailed” due diligence and “lengthy negotiations,” Tesla will buy 75,000 tonnes (165 million pounds) of nickel over six years, with an option to increase the delivered tonnage. Based on the ruling nickel price the deal is nominally worth more than $1.5 billion. Any iron and cobalt by-products at the proposed mine are also part of the deal.… Read More Here
