Botswana sells troubled state-owned mine to Canada’s Premium Nickel Resources

Canada’s Premium Nickel Resources (PNR) will buy Botswana’s defunct, state-owned BCL copper mine with a view to restarting operations within three years, Minister of Minerals, Green Technology and Energy Resources Lefoko Moagi said late on Tuesday. PNR was awarded an exclusive right to undertake six months of due diligence on BCL, placed under liquidation in 2016, in February. It has now signed a deal to purchase two of the three shafts at the site and some associated infrastructure, Moagi said, without disclosing a value. “All the assets that have not… Read More Here

Kabanga Mineral Resources Estimates project

Kabanga is the largest development-ready nickel sulphide deposit in the world, unmatched in scale and grade, with at least 30 years life of mine and further exploration upside. An extensive amount of exploration and resource definition has been completed to date, setting the Kabanga nickel project on a well-defined path to production.” The Kabanga Nickel Sulphide Resource Based on approximately 600 km of drilling, Kabanga’s previous owners, Barrick Gold Corporation (Barrick) and Glencore, published a Resource Estimate (Measured, Indicated and Inferred) in 2014 of 58 million tonnes of ore at… Read More Here

Demand for copper, lithium and nickel batteries increases by more than 400%, study finds

These analysts’ forecasts indicate good prospects for the mining companies in the DRC which produce all these minerals. BloombergNEF (BNEF), a provider of strategic research, has increased its forecast for annual lithium-ion battery demand by more than a third from its previous forecast due to expectations of rapid growth in the passenger vehicle segment, mining.com reports. According to the BNEF, annual demand for lithium-ion batteries will exceed 2.7 terawatt-hours per year by 2030, a 35% increase over the analysis company’s forecast made last year. Passenger vehicles will account for 72% of… Read More Here

Copper, cobalt, lithium, nickel & tin, among the materials that will dominate the green and digital transition

A new report from Fitch Solutions predicts that certain “conventional” raw materials will receive an additional boost over the next 20 years, as they take center stage in green and digital transitions. These products include copper, nickel, tin, aluminum and rare earths which, along with lithium and cobalt, are expected to experience a boom in demand over decades in the midst of the battery revolution. . “While the ‘traditional’ base metal mining and refining sectors such as copper, nickel, tin and aluminum are well established, we note that the lithium… Read More Here

Metals price rally could hamper switch to green energy — IEA

Soaring metals prices may be good for miners, but they put at risk the ongoing transition to clean energy as batteries, solar panels and wind turbines need considerable amounts of copper, nickel, cobalt, lithium and other minerals to be manufactured, a new report warns. According to The International Energy Agency (IEA), reaching the goals of the Paris climate agreement would result in a quadrupling mineral demand by 2040. Yet a lack of investment in new mines could substantially raise the costs of clean energy technologies, the IEA said on Wednesday. “The… Read More Here

Cobalt, nickel battery use rises as electric sports cars gain popularity

Despite a big drop from December’s blowout, largely due to seasonal factors, the February 2021 MINING.COM EV Metal Index, which tracks the value of battery metals in newly registered passenger EVs (including hybrids) around the world, still ranks as the fourth best month on record. Just shy of $300 million worth of lithium, cobalt, nickel and graphite hit roads in February, up 170% from the same month last year as the impact of the coronavirus only just started to ripple beyond China. For the first two months, the year on… Read More Here

Nickel demand for EVs to outpace lithium and cobalt – report

As battery metals continue to rise to the forefront of attention, much has centered around lithium and cobalt. Governments have enacted policies to encourage investment into the critical raw materials they deem essential to the green energy transition. At the same time, supply chain concerns surrounding nickel have begun to garner increasing focus. As a key component of battery cathode chemistry in many existing and upcoming electric vehicles (EVs), nickel will remain an important metal to watch in the coming decade, market analyst Fitch Solutions maintains in its latest industry report. Fitch has updated its estimate of… Read More Here

Tesla gets involved in New Caledonia mine to secure nickel supply

Electric cars maker Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) will become a technical adviser at the conflict-ridden New Caledonia nickel mine, as part of the company’s attempt to secure enough supply of the key battery metal, which CEO Elon Musk has singled out as the his biggest concern. Political leaders in the French Pacific territory agreed on Thursday to sell a majority stake in Vale’s nickel business to a consortium called Prony, which includes Swiss commodity trader Trafigura. The Brazilian miner, the world’s top nickel producer, had been on the hunt for a buyer for over a… Read More Here
