DRC and Burundi Strengthen Bilateral Cooperation for Economic Growth
President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) met with his Burundian counterpart, Évariste Ndayishimiye, on Sunday, December 22, 2024, in Bujumbura for a friendship visit aimed at enhancing bilateral relations and regional stability, key to the economic development of both nations.
This two-hour meeting marks a significant step in revitalizing the economic ties between the DRC and Burundi. The two leaders emphasized the importance of deepening trade and cross-border collaborations, particularly in infrastructure, energy, and natural resources.
According to a source close to the Congolese presidency, “The historical ties that unite our two nations are not just political but also economic. Strengthening this cooperation is crucial for the sustainable development of our populations.”
The visit is part of President Tshisekedi’s broader diplomatic strategy to foster peace and stability in the Great Lakes region, a critical factor for economic advancement.
With the DRC’s vast natural resources and Burundi’s emerging economy, both countries have aligned interests in attracting foreign investment and driving local economic growth.
This strengthened relationship could lead to initiatives such as the development of trade corridors, joint management of water and energy resources, and the establishment of a cross-border special economic zone.
The solid rapport between the two leaders, demonstrated through previous meetings, including during the FOCAC 2024 forum in Beijing, reflects a strategic partnership.
The DRC’s growing role in regional and international forums signals its ambition for economic leadership in the Great Lakes region.
President Ndayishimiye has also made two official visits to Kinshasa in 2023 and 2024, further cementing the ties between the nations. These exchanges underline the shared commitment to prioritizing economic collaboration in diplomatic relations.
By intensifying their cooperation, the DRC and Burundi are poised to become key players in regional economic development. Enhanced infrastructure, increased trade, and coordinated security efforts will create a more favorable environment for business and investment.
Although challenges remain, this visit highlights the leaders’ determination to transform the Great Lakes region into a hub of economic integration and prosperity—an ambition that could greatly benefit millions of citizens in both countries.
