DRC: between 2015 and 2019, more than 5.9 million tonnes of copper were produced in the country
Counted among the largest copper producing countries, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) achieved an estimated production of 5,946,228.74 million tons during the period between 2015 and 2019.
This is what the data from the DRC statistical directory (2020 edition) provides.
According to the same source, during this period Congolese copper exports were valued at 5,799,364.75 million tonnes.
However, the Ministry of Mines did not communicate on the revenue generated by this production.
In 2020, the Congolese Government had set a copper production record with a production of around 1,601,218 million tonnes of copper in 2020. This had never before been achieved in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
In the first half of last year, the DRC sold 871,956 tons of copper, representing a 10% year-on-year increase.
After being increased to 1.6 million tonnes in 2020, Congolese copper production in 2021 was therefore on track to exceed the record for the year with production projections of around 1.7 million tonnes, if the performance of the first six months continued over the rest of the year. This should be facilitated by the entry into production of the Kamoa-Kakula copper mine in May 2021.
