Tshisekedi called upon, to allow audits of partnerships between Gécamines and foreign mining companies
The president of the LICOCO (Congolese League for the fight against corruption), Ernest Mpararo, launched an appeal, this Wednesday, September 23, to the President of the Republic, Félix Tshisekedi, to allow an audit of all the partnerships concluded between Gécamines and foreign mining companies. According to Mr Mpararo, the audit would provide resources to Gécamines, especially since he considers that these contracts are “unbalanced” for Gécamines.
“We want this audit because we have found that a lot of companies are lying. They say they don’t have a lot of money, that they don’t make a profit. These partnerships benefit these mining companies more than the Congolese State or Gécamines. This audit may increase Gécamines’ shares in contracts already concluded. We saw it with Boss Mining, the shares of Gécamines increased to 45%. We saw with KCC she paid fines. KCC canceled some expenses that were not eligible. We believe that if we audited the various contracts with TFM, Ivanhoe Mines, METOREX, we could derive revenues that are lacking at Gécamines today. We are relaunching this call today because there was already a momentum in the direction of the audit of this partnership but it was stopped,We do not know why. We are making this appeal by telling the Congolese that the mines belong to us and that we must be vigilant. We must not focus on simplistic questions and leave the questions of great importance, ”declared Ernest Mpararo during the press conference during which the“ Tous pour la RD Congo ”coalition published a report entitled“ Congo Nursing or Bashing. Who really works for Global Witness ”.
In this report, LICOCO and the NGOs grouped within “Tous pour la RD Congo” note that since 2004 Global Witness has published more than 12 reports on the DRC while not focusing “always in the same way oriented on the natural resources, and in particular the mining sector and Gécamines ”.
“The“ Tous pour la RDC ”coalition notes that the analyzes made by the NGO Global Witness in the reports read by its experts are based on unproven historical facts, on biased data, on information obtained from sources most often anonymous or committed to their cause and not open to an adversarial debate ”, indicates the press release of this platform following the publication of this report.
