DRC: Glencore exchanges with Gécamines, APLC and FEC on the fight against corruption

GLENCORE, one of the largest commodity trading and extraction companies in the DRC, organized this Thursday, December 10 in Kinshasa, an experience sharing activity on the fight against corruption. Gécamines, the Agence Congolaise de Lutte contre la Corruption (APLC) and the Fédération des Entreprises du Congo (FEC) were invited to this meeting to participate in the discussion panel on anti-corruption mechanisms.

This activity also took place as part of the international day against corruption, celebrated every December 9, according to Chantal Kanyinda, Executive Director of Glencore in the DRC.

“We think it was time to talk about corruption as yesterday was the international anti-corruption day. It is a way for Glencore to celebrate this day. Glencore has always smelled of holiness with the Government. We wanted the APLC which was created to fight corruption to participate in this activity. We wanted Gécamines, our partner, and the FEC to take part in this activity, “said Chantal Kanyinda.

She also described GLENCORE’s achievements in the DRC. According to him, GLENCORE has invested more than 7 billion USD in capital and invested in several community activities in DRC.

It employs more than 7,000 employees at its companies in the DRC. In addition, Sama Lukonde, CEO of Gécamines, in his speech, recalled that the issue of the fight against corruption is one of the values ​​of Générale des Carrières et des Mines. He thinks that the improvement of the social conditions of workers is of capital importance to better fight against this scourge.

“Gécamines has always been an exemplary company in the discipline. There is an awareness that should be made at the level of all Congolese who must internalize the misdeeds of corruption. At Gécamines we apply positive sanctions to everything. which is subject of corruption. We strongly fight corruption. Besides work, it is necessary to improve the social conditions of workers to spare them not to be exposed to corruption “, said Sama Lukonde. 

The coordinator of the APLC, Ghislain Kikangala and the representative of the FEC have also developed solutions on the tracks to fight corruption in the DRC.

Glencore is one of the world’s largest commodity trading and mining companies. She is based in Baar in the canton of Zug. The Glencore group is active in the production and trading of 90 raw materials. It employs 146,000 people around the world. In DRC, Glencore owns two companies: Mutanda Mining Sàrl (MUMI) which is an open pit copper and cobalt mine, as well as Kamoto Copper Company Sàrl (KCC) which is a group of copper and cobalt mines. These two companies are located near the town of Kolwezi and employ a total of 22,000 people. KCC and MUMI hold some of the largest copper and cobalt reserves in the world, making Glencore one of the largest copper producers

and cobalt globally. In recent years, Glencore’s production of cobalt has increased sharply, following an increase in demand for cobalt, in particular to manufacture batteries for electric cars.
