DRC: Government congratulates miners for record production of over 1.4 million tonnes of copper in 2020

Prime Minister Sylvestre Ilunga Ilunkamba held on Wednesday December 30, 2020 at the Prime Minister’s office the last meeting of the economic conjuncture committee of the year. During this meeting, the Minister Willy Kitobo Samsoni proceeded to the presentation of the note of his sector.

According to Jean-Baudouin Mayo, VPM, Minister of Budget who reported on this meeting, the Democratic Republic of Congo has achieved a large production compared to last year (2019).

“The production was at the rendezvous this year, around 1,400,000 tons of copper. I believe that this is an opportunity for the government to congratulate the mining operators and encourage them to produce more for the good of the Congolese people, ”he said.

According to him, the exports of mining products have on the other hand declined somewhat and we will seek to find out the reasons but the production is there. “This production guarantees exports, at any time we can send abroad” reassured the number one of the budget.

On the market, informs Jean-Baudouin Mayo, an increase in the prices of all mining products has been observed with the exception of copper and Zinc.

“We should not be alarmed because today copper is around $ 7,800 per metric ton, it is a price that guarantees the operating cost price, which is a good thing, the price of cobalt stands at $ 32,000 per metric ton, although this production had it not been for the perverse effects of Covid19 would allow us to achieve better than what has been done, “added Jean-Baudouin Mayo.

Remember, the Congolese economic model is always extroverted. Faced with this situation, several economic experts have always recommended the diversification of the Congolese economy. The latter would go through the exploitation of other potentialities abounding in the country (agriculture) or by creating added value to the mining activities during exploitation.
