DRC: Juvenal Munubo requested a fact-finding mission on the social impact of mining in Walikale
The national deputy Juvénal Munubo Mubi presented Friday to the office of the National Assembly the official request for a fact-finding mission on the social impact of mining in the territory of Walikale, the largest territory of the province of North Kivu, with 39.46% of its area. The mission will have to take stock of the situation and make recommendations to the government.
A report by the United Nations Joint Office for Human Rights (UNJHRO) in July stressed that the weakness of the authority of the Congolese state in this territory is one of the causes of the proliferation and control of mining activities. by the armed groups which ensure the monopoly and have developed the arms trade in the region, thus creating manifest insecurity for the civilian populations.
Walikale is also the zone of influence of one of the most important armed groups in eastern DRC, the NDR.
This initiative of MP Munubo comes during the week of the debate on the report of the mission carried out in the territory of Mwenga (South Kivu) by the deputies from September 8 to 14 following the denunciations concerning the illegal exploitation of minerals in this part. of the country by outfits by foreigners.
These mining companies, which operate industrially, pass themselves off as mining cooperatives called for artisanal activities and subject to another regime. They rob the Congolese state with the help of public services.
