DRC mining companies think of joint action to save child victims of mining
Mining giants operating in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) including Kamoa Mining, Tenke Fungurume Mining, MMG and Kico have expressed an interest in taking joint action to improve the social conditions of children whose lives are negatively impacted by mining in the province of Haut-Katanga.
This initiative was welcomed by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and several other stakeholders who promised to lend a hand to the sustainability of the project.
In a press release made public on this subject, the project stakeholders reiterated their great interest in the development of children in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
“Our companies contribute in one way or another to the development of local communities. Like the Kamoa mining company, based in Lualaba today, the communities of Musoka Ntanda where it is located can testify because the school and health infrastructures that directly affect the well-being of children bear the name of this company . “, they said.
In particular, Tenke Fungurume mining also says it supports local communities in the field of health, protection, nutrition, water and sanitation in Lualaba province.
To carry out the common project, the volunteers expect to define, in the coming days, the roles that each member will have to play. They also promise to define the contribution of companies, the State and partners in this project.
“We know that mining companies are involved in community development. And in the community, there are children and as the goal of UNICEF is to make children grow up well with all their potentialities. We will continue to discuss with the mining companies and all the stakeholders to see what we can do together for the development of children”, informed Julie Pharrant, head of the UNICEF Office in Lubumbashi in the province of Haut- Katanga.
It should be noted that through this act, the various investors intend to direct the center of social interventions on children.
