DRC – Patrick Muyaya Reappointed as Minister of Communication and Media

Patrick Muyaya has been reappointed as Minister of Communication and Media in the Suminwa Government. Muyaya is one of the few ministers who have served through the Sama I, Sama II, and now Suminwa administrations.

Initially appointed in the Sama I Government, Muyaya brought a vision of changing the narrative by enhancing the country’s image nationally and internationally through strategic institutional communication. As the government spokesperson, he aimed to present the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in a positive light.

During his second term in the Sama II Government, Muyaya actively countered misinformation and fake news, particularly in response to aggression from neighboring countries.

He frequently addressed the media to expose Rwandan aggression through M23 proxies and led a national mobilization campaign, “Bendele ekweya te,” to support the FARDC in defending the country’s sovereignty.

Through weekly briefings, Muyaya provided updates on government decisions and allowed fellow ministers to address pressing issues.

His efforts earned him a trophy from media professionals for successfully organizing the papal visit, during which he established a state-of-the-art media center.

Muyaya has also been recognized by the Les Points poll. His tenure includes the modernization of Radio Télévision Nationale Congolaise (RTNC), the implementation of the Muyaya Law, and the organization of the States General of Communication and Media.

As a national deputy, he was involved in numerous initiatives, such as raising COVID-19 awareness, participating in G13 parliamentary initiatives, co-drafting the electoral law (Lokondo Law), modifying the Labor Code for pregnant women, and improving the DRC’s global image.

Media professionals highlight several challenges for Muyaya’s third term. Key among them is ensuring the viability of press companies through subsidies to alleviate sector precariousness.

Other challenges include organizing the UNPC Congress, restoring order among journalists, decriminalizing press offenses, and continuing the modernization of RTNC infrastructure in the provinces.

The elected officials of Funa and his supporters wish him a fruitful mandate, hoping for new initiatives that will boost the Suminwa Government and contribute to the success of President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi’s second term.
