DRC Plans Strategic Partnership with China to Advance Transport and Infrastructure Projects

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is strengthening its collaboration with China to accelerate development in key sectors, including transport.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Communication Routes, and Disenclavement, Jean-Pierre Bemba Gombo, emphasized this partnership during a Council of Ministers meeting on November 22, 2024.

Bemba presented an information note detailing efforts to prepare a comprehensive list of projects to be submitted to Chinese financial institutions as part of the Sino-Congolese cooperation framework.

According to the minutes of the Council of Ministers, the finalized project lists were discussed during the fourth Task Force meeting held on November 12, 2024.

The projects are set to be defended before Chinese financial institutions in December. To ensure readiness, sectoral ministries were instructed to provide key elements, including project summaries, feasibility studies (APS or APD), executive summaries, and designated focal points for each project.

Bemba urged ministries that have not yet submitted their projects to expedite the process to meet the timeline.

China and the DRC have established seven priority areas for their partnership:

  1. Infrastructure development (airports, ports, railways).
  2. Agriculture.
  3. Energy and water resources.
  4. Mineral resource transformation.
  5. Healthcare.
  6. Professional training and cultural exchange.
  7. Scientific research.

This strategic alignment reflects the DRC’s ambition to leverage Chinese support for sustainable development and improved connectivity across the nation.
