DRC Plans to Enhance Energy and Water Supply Infrastructure

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) currently has an electrical energy capacity of 2,800 Megawatts (MW), but only 2,100 MW are utilized, according to data shared on Thursday, July 18, 2024, by Minister of Hydraulic Resources and Electricity, Teddy Lwamba Muba.

The information was provided during a press briefing co-hosted with the Minister of Communication and Media, Patrick Muyaya Katembwe.

Minister Lwamba outlined the government’s strategy to improve water and electricity supply, emphasizing a multi-phase approach.

“The electricity sector in the DRC is growing and developing. Today, we have an installed capacity of 2,800 MW, with 2,100 MW available.

There are gaps, particularly in planning. We need planning tools, including a well-defined sectoral policy. Based on this, we are equipping the country with necessary working tools,” explained Lwamba.

The ministers provided an overview of the current state and future prospects of the sector. Lwamba highlighted that the sector’s development aligns with the Suminwa Government’s program, focusing on four main areas:

-Ensuring reliability in the water sector.

-Revitalizing economic growth through the electricity sector.

-Investing in the water and electricity infrastructure.

-Regulating and improving the legal framework.

This strategic approach aims to address the current gaps and bolster the DRC’s energy and water supply systems, driving economic growth and improving living standards for its citizens.
