DRC Prime Minister Resigns to Assume Legislative Role
In a surprising turn of events, Prime Minister Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has tendered his resignation to President Félix Tshisekedi.
This decision comes just eight days after the validation of his mandate as a national Deputy, signaling a swift transition from executive to legislative responsibilities.
Under the unique electoral provisions of the DRC, government officials who are elected as National Deputies are granted an 8-day window to decide whether to accept their elected posts.
As the deadline approached on Tuesday, February 20th at midnight (GMT+1), several other prominent figures also resigned from their ministerial positions to join the National Assembly.
Among those transitioning to the chamber basse du Parlement are Vital Kamerhe, Jean-Pierre LIHAU, Antipas Mbusa Nyamwisi, Crispin Mbadu, Claudine Ndusi, and Muabilu Puis.
President Tshisekedi’s decision to allow government members to manage current affairs during this transition period underscores his commitment to ensuring continuity in public governance amidst ongoing political shifts.
Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde’s resignation marks the conclusion of his tenure as Prime Minister, a position he assumed in February 2021 after the December 2023 elections.
Having participated in numerous Council of Minister sessions and recently attended the Investing in African Mining Indaba, Lukonde, now 46, formally submitted his resignation during a meeting with President Tshisekedi at the Cité de l’Union Africaine in Kinshasa.
In the interim, President Tshisekedi has requested Lukonde and other departing cabinet members to remain in their roles until the appointment of a new government.
