DRC’s Tin Exports Surge in 2024 Amid Growing Global Demand
The mining sector in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) saw significant revenue from tin exports in 2024. According to the Ministry of Mines’ annual report, the country exported 42,953 tonnes of tin, generating an estimated USD 512.9 million in revenue from international markets.
As a major player in the global tin market, the DRC continues to assert its dominance, particularly in the electronics and metallurgical industries.
Of the total exports, industrial production accounted for 27,100.10 tonnes, bringing in around USD 350.2 million. The Alphamin Bisie company leads the sector, with 99% of industrial exports, while the SAKIM Company holds a minor share.
Alphamin Bisie, primarily operating in North Kivu, remains the dominant force in Congolese tin production. Artisanal mining contributed 15,852.95 tonnes and USD 162.8 million in revenue, making it a vital economic pillar despite being less structured than industrial efforts.
Key artisanal production regions include Haut-Katanga (45%), Maniema (26%), South Kivu (18%), Tanganyika (8%), and North Kivu.
Tin is a critical metal used in electronic components, alloys, and the automotive industry, and its growing global demand continues to drive exports from the DRC.
However, the sector faces challenges such as price volatility and issues surrounding the traceability of “conflict” minerals. Artisanal mining, although significant, remains largely unregulated, and concerns about transparency and illicit mineral trade persist.
To address these issues, the Congolese government has introduced regulations on mineral certification and traceability to improve sector governance and attract more investment.
With sustained global demand and increasing investments, the DRC has the potential to further boost its tin exports in the coming years. Improved infrastructure and operating conditions could solidify the country’s position in the international market.
The future of the sector will depend on the DRC’s ability to modernize its mining industry while ensuring fair benefits for its population.
