EITI-DRC Advocates for Transparent and Inclusive Mineral Supply Chains
The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative in the Democratic Republic of Congo (EITI-DRC) recently affirmed its commitment to promoting sustainable and inclusive mineral supply chains during a board meeting held in Toronto, Canada.
Led by Jean-Jacques Kayembe, the national coordinator of EITI-DRC, the meeting focused on disclosing information about artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) in an informal context.
The multi-stakeholder group recommended producing a comprehensive report funded by Belgium to provide detailed insights into the ASM sector’s contribution to the country’s economy.
This report includes data on ASM actors, financial flows, production, exports, and employment statistics. Kayembe highlighted the DRC government’s efforts to enhance governance in the mining sector, particularly through adherence to the EITI standard.
Participation in the board meeting allowed the DRC to strengthen collaboration with other EITI member countries and share best practices in transparency within the extractive industries.
The DRC’s membership in the EITI, dating back to 2007, underscores its commitment to transparency and accountability in natural resource management.
The country’s involvement in the Toronto meeting represents a significant step toward promoting transparency, sustainability, and inclusivity in the ASM sector.
