Glencore Spotlights ESG and Gender Equality in Mining at DRC Conference
Glencore is actively working towards increasing gender diversity in the mining sector and is implementing various strategies to achieve this goal.
The company’s sustainability framework is built on four key pillars: health, safety, environment, and social performance, with a strong focus on human rights.
Glencore is particularly proud of its partnership with Gécamines through the “Cahiers des Charges” of Kamoto Copper Company SA (KCC) and Mutanda Mining SARL (MUMI).
With the DRC government holding a 5% stake in these ventures, Glencore expects its social investment in the DRC to surpass $50 million in the next five years.
Glencore, a globally diversified natural resources company and a major producer of copper and cobalt in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), actively participated in this year’s DRC Mining Week.
During the event, Glencore representatives took part in panel discussions on important topics such as “Making Mining Safer for Women: A Crucial Factor for Integration and Social Inclusion” and “Environmental, Social, and Governance Factors: Planning for Future Events Today.”
Clint Donkin, Director of Glencore Copper Africa, emphasized the company’s belief in the significance of a diverse and inclusive culture for business growth and talent attraction, development, and retention.
Glencore aims to have more women join the mining industry and recognizes that diversity enhances their corporate culture and helps achieve business objectives.
They are actively exploring various approaches to improve gender diversity throughout the organization, focusing on creating an inclusive culture and fostering an enjoyable work environment for all employees.
Marie-Chantal Kaninda, President of Glencore RDC, chaired a panel discussion during the event, addressing the impact of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Glencore’s sustainability framework, which centers around health, safety, environment, social performance, and human rights, enables the company to collect and report data on risks, opportunities, and sustainability performance, which in turn informs their business strategy. Glencore strives to integrate sustainability into all aspects of its operations.
Ms. Kaninda concluded by affirming Glencore’s commitment to its people, society, and the environment. The company takes its responsibilities seriously and is dedicated to aligning its activities with relevant international standards.
DRC Mining Week provides a platform for the industry to address pressing issues and collaborate on finding productive solutions. Glencore embraces this opportunity to contribute positively to the sector’s development.
