Haut-Katanga Assembly Launches Environmental Probe into MMG Kinsevere Amid Community Concerns
Following environmental concerns raised by local communities over MMG Kinsevere’s mining activities, Michel Kabwe Muamba, President of the Haut-Katanga Provincial Assembly, has initiated a joint commission to investigate.
On October 28, 2024, Kipushi Territory Administrator Gaunce Bupe Kapalo officially launched the commission’s work, which includes independent experts and representatives of affected parties.
“We are here to fulfill our mandate from the Assembly President,” Kapalo said, calling on residents to remain calm as the commission aims for swift findings, expected by Friday.
Representing MMG, Charles Kyona, Deputy General Manager for Stakeholder Relations, emphasized the significance of sample collection efforts. “Our long-standing relationship with the Kilongo community and commitment to environmental monitoring should help provide accurate findings to reassure the community,” Kyona stated.
The commission began its investigations in Kilongo village, near Lubumbashi, by collecting water samples from local wells, standpipes, and the Kifumanshi River, both upstream and downstream of the discharge site. Soil, air, and additional water samples were taken to ensure comprehensive analysis.
Results are anticipated by the end of the week, with all parties expressing a desire for transparent conclusions to address community concerns.
