Hitachi Begins World’s First Trial of Full Battery Dump Truck at FQM’s Kansanshi Mine
Hitachi Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. has launched a groundbreaking technological feasibility trial of an ultra-large full battery rigid frame dump truck at First Quantum Minerals Ltd.’s Kansanshi copper and gold mine in Zambia.
The trial, initiated in June 2024, aims to validate the operational capabilities of the battery-powered dump truck under real mining conditions, including its performance in tasks such as traveling, turning, and braking, as well as assessing battery charging and discharging cycles.
First Quantum, known for its expertise in trolley system operations and technological development, is facilitating this trial at its Kansanshi mine, providing essential infrastructure like overhead dynamic charging solutions and various operational haul circuits.
This collaboration accelerates the advancement of this innovative technology, making it a practical and commercially viable solution for the mining industry.
Moreover, Zambia’s commitment to renewable energy, where 92% of energy comes from renewable sources including hydroelectric, solar, wind, and biogas, underscores the country’s push towards decarbonization.
Hitachi Construction Machinery aims to leverage this trial to further develop its products and explore broader applications worldwide, supporting global efforts towards zero emissions in mining operations.
Eiji Fukunishi, Vice President and Executive Officer of Hitachi Construction Machinery, emphasized the significance of reducing environmental impact in mining: “The full battery dump truck represents the future of mining equipment, and our collaboration with First Quantum marks a pivotal step in advancing zero-emission solutions.”
John Gregory, Director of Mining at First Quantum, highlighted the operational benefits of the technology: “The trolley assist system with Hitachi Construction Machinery’s 2,600V infrastructure allows multiple trucks to operate simultaneously on overhead lines, demonstrating its operational, practical, and economic feasibility.”
Developed in partnership with ABB Ltd., a leader in electrification and automation, the full battery dump truck integrates Hitachi’s experience with trolley dynamic charging systems and ABB’s battery technology.
This allows continuous operation by charging directly from overhead lines and regenerative braking, optimizing battery life and vehicle payload capacity while minimizing environmental impact and lifecycle costs.
With rising demand for electrified mining equipment, Hitachi Construction Machinery is committed to co-creating solutions with customers to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in mining operations, further advancing sustainable practices in the industry.
