Itezhi Tezhi Hydropower Project (ITHP) Confirms Low Power Generation

Itezhi Tezhi Hydro Project, capable of supplying 120MW of power to ZESCO, is currently generating only 80MW due to low water levels in the reservoir lake and river.

This was confirmed in an interview by ITHP CEO Moses Mbuta, he stated that the company is unable to reach full capacity due to the varying water levels, and that increasing water levels in the future will increase power generation.

Low rainfall has resulted in low water levels in major rivers where dams have been built, leading to decreased power generation across the country.

Although ITHP is trying to reach full capacity, the power shortage has led to electricity rationing for domestic and commercial users.

ZESCO has reduced load shedding from 12 hours to 8 hours a day, but some areas still report longer power cuts. The unreliable power supply is affecting Zambia’s economy, with small and medium enterprises facing closure.
