Jean-Luc Mélenchon Blames Rwanda for Failed Coup Attempt in DRC
Jean-Luc Mélenchon, president of the political party “La France Insoumise,” has reacted to the attempted coup on Sunday, May 19, in Kinshasa. Mélenchon, an opponent of Emmanuel Macron, accused Rwanda and its allies of orchestrating the failed coup.
“Full support for the institutions of the DRC and President Tshisekedi who defeated a coup attempt by foreign agents linked to Rwanda and its allies,” wrote Mélenchon on his social media account.
The DRC authorities have long accused Rwanda of supporting the M23 rebel group, which has been responsible for terror and instability in the eastern part of the country.
However, in their official communication, the Congolese army mentioned a coup attempt involving foreigners and Congolese but did not explicitly name Rwanda.
The Congolese Government condemned the attempt to “destabilize the country’s institutions,” which included an attack on the Palais de la Nation, the seat of the President’s office.
Prior to this, the insurgents also attacked the residence of Vital Kamerhe, resulting in the death of two police officers guarding the area.
The government reassured the Congolese people of its unwavering commitment to security, territorial integrity, and sovereignty, emphasizing their determination to protect the nation at all costs.
The situation was brought under control by the afternoon, with several attackers apprehended or neutralized. The attempted coup drew widespread condemnation from various entities, including the African Union, the United States, Lucha, and Monusco.
