Job Redundancy Talks Begin at Kansanshi Mining PLC and FQM
Management at Kansanshi Mining PLC and First Quantum Minerals (FQM) have initiated discussions with mine unions concerning the imminent job redundancies among unionized workers following the merger of the two companies.
Both Kansanshi Mining PLC and First Quantum Minerals have formally notified the mine unions of their intention to reduce the workforce as part of the merger and restructuring process aimed at enhancing operational efficiency.
Saul Simujika, President of the National Union of Miners and Allied Workers Union (NUMAW), disclosed that the mine is currently evaluating the number of employees who will be affected by the redundancy measures.
Mr. Simujika also advised unionized workers in the affected departments, who are willing to pursue voluntary separation, to seize this opportunity to part ways with the mine.
In the meantime, Joseph Chewe, President of the Mine Workers Union of Zambia (MUZ), shared that the mine has informed the unions that the job redundancies will be implemented between August 1st and December 30th, 2023.
Mr. Chewe emphasized that the union has urged the mine to minimize the number of workers affected by redundancy, highlighting the possibility of redeploying some employees at Trident Limited.
Yosam Nyirongo, General Secretary of the United Mine Workers Union of Zambia, encouraged workers to remain calm as negotiations between the mine and unions proceed.
Furthermore, Kenneth Kapata, Chairperson of the North Western Development Council of Elders, called upon the mine and unions to engage in discussions aimed at reaching a sustainable package for the unionized workers who will be affected by the merger between Kansanshi Mining PLC and First Quantum Minerals.
