Kamoa Copper SA Advocates for Transportation Diversification
The mining company Kamoa Copper SA operating in the province of Lualaba took part in the forum on the evaluation of the revised mining code of 2018 organized by the chamber of mines of the federation of companies of Congo (FEC) which was held in Kinshasa for 3 days, from Wednesday 18 to Thursday 20 October 2022.
At the end of the last day of these meetings, Ben Munanga, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Kamoa, confided to MINES.CD a certain number of difficulties encountered by miners in the DRC.
“There are the difficulties specific to the mining sector: the business climate which has been raised and shared by all the companies and the hassles of the administration. The duplicity of taxes, the interpretation of laws and the Mining Code, these are the administrative problems faced by mining companies and Kamoa included. In terms of the execution of human work, there is this limitation in certain basic infrastructures, in particular the supply of electrical energy which all the mining fraternity mentions; the solutions are in place in the short term but in the long term we tend towards difficulties or challenges…”, he confided.
The PCA of Kamoa Copper SA has also appealed to the government for the diversification of means of transport in the region in order to facilitate exploitation.
“And there is the question of the transport of commercial products with increasingly increasing tonnages and today the road which is the means of transport commonly used shows us its limits, hence the appeal we are making to the officials of the government to consider the diversification of the means of transport, the railway and the rails being an alternative”, launched Ben Munanga.
Speaking of social responsibility, even better of the accountability of the company vis-à-vis local communities, the PCA mentioned some achievements already recorded in the region.
“What is special is that for 8 years, before the first copper production which took place in 2021, Kamoa undertook social type works aimed at the community and its well-being on a large scale such as schools. We have built a total of 8, so you will no longer see children traveling 5 to 10 km to go to school” he said.
He also said that Kamoa Copper has built 4 clinics around the community and solar powered water pumping stations which means that each community has a water point in its locality. In addition to other programs implemented for the welfare of local communities.
It should be noted that these meetings enabled operators in the mining sector to review the challenges and issues facing their sector and to examine the revised Mining Code of 2018, 4 years after its promulgation.
