Kansanshi Mine Lauded for Driving Youth Development and Sports in Zambia
Zambia Recognizes Kansanshi Mine for Supporting Youth, Sports, and Arts Initiatives
The Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts of Zambia has praised Kansanshi Mine PLC for its ongoing investment in youth development, sports, and the arts, describing the company’s efforts as a valuable complement to government programs aimed at empowering young people.
Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts Elvis C. Nkandu highlighted the critical role of the private sector in supporting government initiatives and expanding opportunities for youth across the country.
Speaking during a meeting with Kansanshi Mine management, Minister Nkandu emphasized that partnerships with institutions like the mining company provide platforms for young people to develop their talents and engage in productive activities.
He noted that many youths who might otherwise be vulnerable to illicit activities are being positively engaged through sports and development programs facilitated by the mine.
The minister also commended Kansanshi Mine for its investments in sports infrastructure and events in Solwezi, including the rehabilitation of Independence Stadium and support for activities leading up to Youth Day, which will be commemorated on 12 March 2026.
He added that private sector partners continue to complement government efforts by supporting sporting events and contributing to the training and development of coaches.
Meanwhile, Kansanshi Mine PLC General Manager Meiring Burger emphasized the company’s commitment to using sports as a tool for national development and community empowerment.
Mr. Burger stated that Kansanshi Mine currently supports more than 400 athletes and continues to invest in programs that nurture young talent in the community.
The company also sponsors over 30 sporting events annually, including its flagship Kansanshi Marathon, which is expected to attract more than 2,500 participants this year.
He added that the mine creates opportunities for local athletes to compete at higher levels, citing the participation of one of its athletes in the Comrades Marathon, one of the world’s most prestigious ultra-distance races.
Mr. Burger concluded by reaffirming that the local community remains central to Kansanshi Mine’s initiatives and that the company will continue collaborating with partners to promote sports development and youth empowerment throughout the region.
