key actions of Kibali’s social commitment
The 2018 Mining Code requires mining companies to develop the local communities where their mines are located.
As a good student, the mining company Kibali Gold Mines does not deviate from this rule.
Several achievements have been made by this mining giant in the 14 years since it was established in the Haut-Uele province.
At the 50th press conference held on October 5, 2023, Mark Bristow, President and CEO of Kibali, looked back on these various achievements.
First, concerning community development
Here, the achievements are classified in the sector of education, health, development projects.
In education and capacity building, 30 women were selected for training in PPE production; 158 school kits distributed in partnership with entrepreneurs in the villages of Gaako and Abimva; 6 different schools under construction.
For health-water-sanitation: 12 tapped water sources and 13 drilled wells and the construction of two morgues in Durba and Aru.
Several development projects were carried out, notably: the renovation of roads, i.e. 76 km of agricultural service roads opened during the third quarter; 2 modern market construction projects completed in Moku and Nzopi; Agro-industrial complex under renovation with a chicken coop with capacity for 5,000 chickens and a mill to produce animal feed for community farmers; 1 2 MW solar park under construction; Launch of a cocoa project on 100 ha in Faradje; Renovation of community infrastructure; Durba Community Stadium; Peace Fair; 15 boreholes in different villages.
Second, regarding Kibali’s local engagement.
The main achievements should be noted: The implementation of 8 projects within the framework of the specifications; Launched 44 community projects under the 0.3% endowment funds; Launch of the renovation and construction of community infrastructure (stadium, fair,
Durba and Aru morgue, etc.); Kalinva community resettlement 85% complete; The implementation of the Oere PAR has started; Livelihood
Restoration Agriculture Program launched on 110 hectares in Avokala; Start of a cocoa project on 100 ha in Faradje; and the 300 ha sunflower project started with the collaboration of the Catholic Church.
