Landslide in Ituri Mining Area Claims Three Lives

On Tuesday, August 27, 2024, a landslide near Mungwalu in Djugu territory, Ituri, resulted in the deaths of three individuals and injuries to five others. The landslide occurred due to the improper installation of explosives in a gold mine.

Aitambi Itendeyi, Chief of Village Pluto Kpangba, confirmed the incident and highlighted that he had previously advised gold miners to leave such tasks to professionals to prevent accidents. Despite these warnings, the landslide led to a tragic outcome.

This incident follows a similar disaster four months ago in Mbidjo, another mining area in Djugu territory, where four people also lost their lives.

The prevalence of artisanal mining over industrial methods has been linked to numerous accidents at mining sites in Ituri.
