KAMOA Copper is looking for a suitably qualified and experienced Mine Overseer to join our dynamic team.

PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
Under the direction of the Mine Manager, is responsible to ensure that all construction/mining work under his/her control is performed in a safe and efficient manner, he/she is also responsible for the safe operation and control of the underground working of the mine.

Minimum Requirements…

Qualifications Required:

  • BS in science, engineering, mining or related technical discipline and/or equivalent combination of education and experience,
  • And/or Mine Overseer’s certificate.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Fluency in English
  • Post-graduate qualification in mining related course

Skills / Competencies:

  • Safety training
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Experience Required:

  • Minimum of 10 years HS experience in the mining industry or related field, to include surface and/or underground mining operations.

Work Description

  • The Mine overseer is responsible to ensure that all construction/mining work under his/her control is performed in a safe and efficient manner. He/she is also responsible for the safe operation and control of the underground working of the mine. This is achieved through leadership and supervision of a team of subordinates under his/her control, proper planning and implementation of systems to control the work output and work quality of his/her subordinates. This must be done according best practices, regulations, company standards and procedures and all legal requirements relevant to the tasks

Technical Work Responsibilities

  • Thorough knowledge of equipment under his control as well as construction procedures

Core Work Outputs

  • Safety of all personnel working on the mine
  • Shaft repair/upgrade construction, underground civil and mining construction KPI`s are achieved as per schedule.
  • Good employee relations
  • Effective administration of systems

Assist Management in developing a construction and mining schedule and direct and control subordinates to achieve the schedule

  • Assist Management in developing a construction plan as required and to strive to achieve objectives.
  • Plan up to 6 months ahead so that material can arrive on site timeously
  • Liaise with the Management team regarding daily, weekly and monthly progress to plan
  • Oversee that all work practices are executed in compliance with legal requirements and best practices/company policy and procedures
  • Regularly communicate progress against plan to piers and subordinates
  • Oversee the quality of workmanship and conduct regular inspections around his/her area of responsibility
  • Apply discipline as per company policies and procedures.

Mine construction/refurbishment

  • Plan and coordinate daily, weekly and monthly work requirements and priorities with subordinates (planned work, new installations and shut downs)
  • Allocate labour resources and equipment to schedule and priority activities so as to maintain and ensure high levels of labour, and construction standards
  • Chairing start of shift meetings discussing the task for the shift and safety requirements
  • Attending General Safety meeting and giving feedback to team
  • Stop and repair area/equipment as soon as possible after problem is identification
  • Investigation of incidents/accidents in his/her area of responsibility (find root causes and sort out timeously)
  • Ensure procedures are followed – doing planned task observations on a regular basis
  • Liaise with the other Supervisors to ensure that any problems that could overlap with other sections/shifts are pro-actively identified and resolved
  • Oversee the development of a healthy spirit of cooperation between all departments
  • Monitor progress in all areas of his/her responsibility to identify any possible problems or risk areas to the schedule
  • Accompany superiors as required on inspections and audits within his/her area of responsibility.
  • Take charge in your area of responsibility
  • Conduct regular inspections on all works (over inspections on planned jobs and repairs to set standards/legal requirements) to ensure safety and maintenance of technical standards
  • Control costs to achieve maximum availability at lowest expense by
  • Stop unnecessary overtime
  • Purchasing of good quality equipment
  • Have tools necessary for the job available
  • Update work instructions

Administration of necessary systems

  • Compile accurate reports
  • Ensure that required job instructions are available to employees
  • Implement and maintain applicable Safety, Regulations, The Act, Codes of practices, procedures and standards
  • Complete safety, injury, hazard, risk and incident reports
  • Conduct required meetings including safety.
  • Establish procedures for abnormal work requirements which fall outside of standard procedures
  • Ensure that accurate labour records including overtime worked are maintained
  • Ensure that all the data captured on the operational and technical management information and control systems are accurate and timeous
  • Prepare ad-hoc reports for management or other information customers
  • Apply and comply to KCSA’s safety program
  • Assist and participate in Risk Management Processes
  • Completion of audit administration
  • Ensure that engineering administration requirements are complied with
  • Regularly review operational and technical data to extract trends, identify problems and compile management reports
